The Issues

VETO believes the Energex proposal to run high voltage transmission lines using a major river which is subject to regular flood events is

  • Dangerous -  to residents, emergency services and Energex personnel

  • An environmental nightmare- further vandalizing an already fragile river system

  • A danger to the health and safety of those required to live close to the lines

  • Unnecessary - BETTER and less instrusive options exist to meet the energy demands of the community

Camp Cable Fauna Print E-mail

This lovely view of the Logan River will  be spoilt by several poles going across the property as well as the heavy duty lines used tocarry he 110,000 volt current.

The house in the middle of the picture is out of the 100 year flood zone but the rest of the surrounds are not.

HOW WILL ENERGEX FIX THIS UP IN A MINOR FLOOD OR THE MANY STORMS PREDICTED IN THE CURRENT CLIMATE CHANGE HAPPEN?

Logan-Reserve---Henderson-Street-Boatramp-2

A recent photo of a Koala along Camp Cable Road these Australian icons abound

in this very sensative Koala habitat, However Energex want another 20 meters of

an already existing easement many kilometers long thus causing the following;

  • Loss of Koala's (Habitat, food shelter and home)
  • Loss of land (minimizing land, lowering value, and in some cases making front or back yards unusable)
  • Limited to 2 hours underneath the 110,000 Volt Power lines (no sunbaking, fishing, partying, playing, etc.) EMF's

THE CURRENT GOVERNMENT SHOULD BE ASHAMED

THis Koala and tree could be saved if the lines went either underground or on the road where half the produced EMF's would be over the Road easement.

Kangaroos abound around the Camp Cable Rd area. People love what nature has offered and enjoy the beautiful open air.

Many people have purchased in this area for peace and tranquility of country life, yet close enough to the city

This will be spoilt if Energex are allowed to build those 110,000 volt lines with 22 meter high concrete poles and and an easement of 40 meters.

Many People believe and are of the opinion that Energex are environmental bandits and want to add your land to their assets register

River spoilt by powerlines Print E-mail

river-west

This is a photo of the major part of the Logan River with large farms on the right. Soon these will have large 110,000volt Powerlines on them.

This will affect future fire fighting helicopters, and stop farmers from using there massive watering machines, cutting down grass growth, therefore less stock, thus less income.

In the distance one can see the very large and sensitive Koala habitat wich will have a large and long easemnt cut through it.

The top right of this photo is the section of the River depicted in the above photo.

This Photo shows the area that Energex is now going underground. (Glen Road)

Again one can see the Koala habitat in the rear. Energex say they saved $100,000 and reduced the River crossings by going underground on this narrow road.

WHY STOP THERE ENERGEX!

Logan-Reserve---Glen-Road-5

What is wrong with the current route, when we have safer better options.

1. Again Eenergex is not using current easements, but taking peoples land as their easement.

2. Safer underground method is better for peoples health, flora and Fauna, and less long term maintainance costs.

3. River problems such as vistas, Fire fighting helicopters, eloctrocution and delayed repairs for services in   storms/floods.

4. 42+ hectares of prime Koala habitat, plus endangered species will loose their food and home source.

River Dangers Print E-mail

The Logan River is a beautiful, slow moving, tidal River where Energex is contemplating putting their Power lines of 110,000 volts, then it can suddenly change into a flooding torrent pushing gigantic gum trees like a bulldozer down its bed destroying all in its path and flooding lowlands and floodplains for weeks.

VETO now questions Energex why it cannot underground the whole corridor (using a previous shorter route) since the latest changes are cost neutral, and saves $100,000?  why only part of the River corridor is under grounded?

VETO has asked why no other changes and Energex said "along the top end (Camp Cable) only about four submissions were received so most people are happy or they would have submitted a submission and we did talk to all owners individually their biggest concern was, should they have the concrete poles in front or in the backyard" .

Flood01 flood02
A recent flood on the Logan Reserve Road, Energex have indicated to VETO (March 2010) that this new line will now be all underground to the end of Glen Road, but the poles one sees now remain. Flooding of the Logan River behind 78 and 80 Glen Road where 110,000 volt power poles were to be inserted. VETO cannot understand how Energex would have fixed fallen poles or lines in this flood during many days after it has stopped raining?

Koala Sightings in Logan City  and SEQ.

Tlaca2400he koala sightings in the map shown (click to enlarge) have been reported  to WILDNET (Department of Environment and Resource Management) by the community and other scientific experts, and are current to June 2009 and include historically observations as well.  The koala population in the Mount Lindesay North Beaudesert area have NEVER been properly surveyed by any local council or by state government and these WILDNET sightings provide very valuable information for the local area when no other detailed studies have been undertaken

koala01 Here are some Koala photos which VETO and other Koala orientated organisations are trying to save in this their natural habitat area, rather than have their habitat destroyed or being relocated.

Koalas generally do not survive well once out of their original habitat area.

Energex, Project Manager Anita Sietas has indicated to the VETO president on the 3rd March 2010 that they will replant some natives around the lines, however the presidents reply was "Koalas prefer tall trees to hide in, and keep away from predators and they are also territorial animals, small trees and shrubs do nothing for the Koalas"

 I can't live on Energex's structures

I can't eat their poles

Energex's structures make a terrible and dangerous home

My family does not want to be electrocuted

Will those terrible EMF's affect me?

Issue Summary Print E-mail

The main concerns and issues are:

  • Lack of pre consultation before CSR (Corridor Selection Report) was initiated.
  • Mistakes in the CSR, which pre consultation could have eliminated.
  • Lack of support from some Ministers representing the people.
  • The errors of writing that Energex have walked through the corridor, which is untrue.
  • Not notifying all the stake holders.
  • Energex's staff attitude to people, uncompromising and paying only lip service.
  • Energex's lack of feedback to proposals, and  ideas.
  • Lack of honest feedback.
  • 1st IAR (Initial Assessment Report)  and submissions, given 15 working days to respond to a voluminous report (800 pages plus), by ordinary hard working families, people with day Jobs, and with family commitments, and no time extensions.
  • Some local Ministers not helping constituents to get extra time to reply.
  • No dialogue or updates from Energex to VETO.
  • No consultation with VETO on future proposals or direction prior to bringing out changes (no input till IAR)
