About VETO
|
VETO was formed by a group of Logan residents in December 2008 in response to a proposal by Energex to run a 110,000V transmission line along the Logan River floodplain.
The Energex proposal is fundamentally flawed. VETO seeks a solution which meets the needs of energy consumers WITHOUT presenting a safety risk, or unjustifiable threats to our local koala population and fragile river environment.
This site is intended to provide information to local residents and others who are interested in the issue, and who wish to participate in the debate and consultation process.
Don't think you can't do anything about it-
THAT SIMPLY IS NOT TRUE! .....GET INVOLVED TODAY!
COME TO THE MEETINGS, THEY ARE FREE, ALWAYS A WARM WELCOME, AND OFTEN SOME HOME MADE CAKE OR BISCUITS WITH YOUR COFFEE FREE!!!

VETO's Broader community Involvement |
|
|
|
As VETO became involved in protecting and standing up for the community from the Power hungry land grabbing Energex it became involved and noted by agencies who are interested in community organizations that were concerned about our environment.
Another of our valued members then sat down and wrote out a few submissions on how VETO was helping the environment
Healthy_waterway_application.doc
The result of the above was that it was nominated for an award, but unsuccessful in winning, not a bad effort, so
CONGRATULATIONS.

VETO'S History of Changes |
|
|
- 2008 Nov.only directly affected residents receive a letter stating Energex is putting a new 110,000 volt line between Loganlea and Jimboomba (and this is where its going)
- 2008 early December Land owners try to get public meetings,at Mackle's residence instead of Energex's individual meeting, but to no avail.
- 2008 2nd meeting at the Hardman residence VETO was formed, by directly and indirectly affected people.
- A couple of residents go out in the heat to do letter drops, to inform the community, as Energex only notified directly involved people.
- 2009 Jan/Mar VETO receives CSR (Corridor Selection Report), they examine it and asks for information, but if not appertaining to the selected corridor nothing. VETO realizes many flaws and broken protocols.
- 2009 Feb.Energex and VETO have their first meeting at Logan Village.
- 2009 Feb. The then LNP spokesperson Geoff Seeney indicated that if elected LNP would review the proposal and CSR. (problem is that the corridor is in 4 separate electorates 1. LNP Beaudesert, Aiden McLindon. 2. Labour Logan, John Mickel, 3. Labour Waterford Evan Moorehead, 4. Labour Albert Margaret Keech) we are fully supported by Aiden, and the rest is Labour and we assume must follow Party lines.
- 2009 VETO worked hard and gained the strong support of Logan City Council (Pam Parker, Phil Pidgeon, Sean Black), LNP Lawrene Springborg (opposition leader) Aiden Mclindon (LNP Beaudesert), Media, and many concerned residents from all walks of life.
- 2009 the Labour Energy Minister Stephen Robertson indicated he must remain impartial. AS STEPHEN MAKES THE FINAL DECISION from Energex's proposal and Governmemts view.
- 2009 John Paul Langbroeck merely said he would review the proposal if elected.
- 2009 during the year VETO staff made themselves available to support landholders when visited by Energex, the result was the slightly different stories they were told to allay their fears.
- 2009 mid year VETO met with Peter Garret he indicated he is involved if we can find some endangered species protected by Federal Legislation.
- 2009 June the first Initial Assesment Report (IAR) came out with 15 working days to reply (hard working people, needed to spend evenings and weekends reading 800+ pages), and results to be announced in Sept. VETO is told we have one more opportunity to respond which is 2nd IAR.
- 2009 tail end, VETO still waits for reports and is busy finding costs, soil types, River flooding, erosion, Koala counts, other Flora and Fauna, any endangered species, Pole integrity, OHS (for people, owners, SES, Helicopters during fires, nearby airports) and so on.
- 2009 during Winter and Spring, VETO and landholders see pegs by Energex put into their properties, Energex's excuse was that VETO wanted to know where the poles were going as diagrams kept changing, this gave Energex time to do a survey.
- September 2009 news breaks that LCC have extended urban footprint into Energex's corridor.
- 2009 VETO has a Christmas Party.
- 2009/2010 LNP Elect Bert Van Manen pledges his support being a local and having enjoyed the River in his youth, attends VETO's meetings when possible.
- 2010 Feb. sightings by people of Energex, rumours abound, many of VETO's sources say their is a direction change.
- 2010 late Feb. Energex meets Landholder previously not affected and shows new route, confirming VETO's suspicion, LNP elect visits new corridor.
- 2010 first few days of March Energex meets council 1st March then VETO 2nd March. At the VETO meeting Energex indicates an extension of nearly 2 years to original completion date 2012, an interim submission in March and to go with first submission. 2nd and final IAR due in June. Interim report due to a small corridor change.
- Energex organize a "Community Information Day" 11th and 13th March 2010, VETO has presence. (Only about 50 people turn up over 2 days)
- Energex distribute Supplementary IAR 16/17th March 2010.
- VETO and people given till 8th April to read and reply with a supplemetary submissions to be included with last years (June) submission (15 days given to reply)
- March 2010 Logan Council makes a stand, and organizes a meeting with Ministers for Transport and Energy with a revised plan of their own
- March 2010 Council confirms Energex must underground in areas designated "Urban" by LCC
- During April and May many Council meetings discussed Loganlea to Jimboomba corridor and its impacts.
- End of May VETO apoints a media person to support spokesperson.
- June 4th 2010 VETO's submission to Premiers Sustainability program nominated for an award.
- June 21st 2010 Energex to distribute FINAL INTERIM ASSESSMENT REPORT (FIAR)
- July 9th 2010 final day for submissions and your say
- All repliesfrom last submission believed received 14th August 2010. ENERGEX NOW TO DO PRESENTATION TO MINISTER
- VETO Presidents Submission not accepted Energex cited not received.
- 24th August 2010 Maree Slingsby resigns her position, Laurie Koranski voted in as Spokesperson
